Getting back to the inspiring story of Raye; her decision to break free from her former record label, Polydor Records, was not an easy one. She had been signed to the label since 2014, with the promise of launching her career and releasing her debut album. However, as the years went by, Raye found herself stuck in a cycle of delays and disappointments.

In June 2021, Raye took to Twitter to express her frustration with Polydor Records, alleging that she was being held back from releasing her music. She revealed that despite being signed to a major label for several years, she had yet to release her debut album. Instead, her music remained shelved, collecting dust in folders while she waited for approval to proceed. In her career, Raye had already accomplished a significant amount. She had released a mini-album, five EPs, and over 20 singles, both as a lead artist and a featured artist. Moreover, her songwriting prowess had been recognized by industry giants like Beyoncé, Rihanna, Little Mix, and Anne-Marie, for whom she had penned songs. One of her recent singles, "Bed," a collaboration with Joel Corry and David Guetta, emerged as the standout hit of 2021 by a British female artist. Despite these achievements, Raye found herself in a perplexing situation with her record label, Polydor Records.

"Imagine this pain," Raye wrote, describing the emotional toll of being unable to share her art with the world. She spoke candidly about the pressure of constantly monitoring numbers and statistics, hoping for the green light to finally release her album. Raye's tweets shed light on the harsh realities faced by artists within the music industry, particularly artists of color. Despite her talent and dedication, she felt overlooked and undervalued by the very label that was meant to support her career.

Polydor Records responded to Raye's tweets, expressing sadness at her statement and offering their support. However, Raye's frustrations had reached a boiling point, and she ultimately decided to part ways with the label. Breaking free from Polydor Records marked a turning point in Raye's career. Embracing her independence, she took control of her music and her destiny. Her resilience and determination propelled her forward, leading to her groundbreaking success at the Brit Awards 2024.
